UK Study Abroad Roadmap

24–36 months of preparation.
One dream becoming reality.

The complete roadmap from Grade 9-10 in Vietnam to receiving an offer from your dream UK university — broken into 3 phases, 9 key milestones, and practical guidance for every step.

Choose your starting point

Studying in the UK isn't a one-day decision — it's the result of a carefully prepared journey spanning 2-3 years. The families who succeed aren't the ones with the most money or the smartest children. They're the ones who start early, plan systematically, and execute consistently.

This roadmap is built from the real journeys of over 200 Vietnamese families we've accompanied from IGCSE through A Level to UCAS submission. Every milestone, every timeline, every piece of advice comes from actual experience — not theory.

"The best time to start preparing for UK study abroad is 3 years before application. The second best time is today."

Three phases — one destination

Phase 1
Foundation Building
Academic English + IGCSE preparation. Build the base your child needs before A Level.
Months 1–12
Phase 2
Specialization
IGCSE mastery + A Level subject selection + degree pathway planning.
Months 13–24
Phase 3
Execution
A Level exams + UCAS application + Personal Statement + Interviews.
Months 25–36
Phase 1

Building Foundations — English & IGCSE

The most underestimated phase. What happens here determines the ceiling of everything that follows.

01

Assessment & Initial Direction

Month 1–2

Comprehensive assessment of current English level (IELTS diagnostic), subject strengths, learning style, and family goals. Based on this, we build a personalized 24-36 month roadmap with clear milestones.

IELTS diagnostic test
Subject aptitude assessment
Family goal-setting session
Draft personalized roadmap
02

Focus on Academic English

Month 3–8

The biggest barrier for Vietnamese students entering A Level isn't subject knowledge — it's academic English. This phase focuses on building the language skills needed to study content subjects entirely in English: reading academic texts, writing structured essays, understanding exam instructions, and expressing scientific concepts precisely.

Academic vocabulary building (500+ terms per subject)
Essay structure & academic writing
Subject-specific English (Math terminology, Science lab language)
Target: IELTS 5.5–6.0 by month 8
03

First IELTS exam + First IGCSE subject

Month 9–12

Sit the first IELTS exam as a benchmark. Simultaneously begin IGCSE preparation in 1-2 core subjects (typically Mathematics and one science). This overlap builds confidence and proves the student can handle English-medium study.

IELTS exam (target 6.0+)
IGCSE Mathematics foundation
Explore potential A Level subject combinations
Phase 2

Specialization — IGCSE mastery & degree pathway

This is where academic identity forms. Your child goes from "studying subjects" to "building a university profile."

04

Achieve top grades in IGCSE

Month 13–18

IGCSE grades set the foundation for A Level subject choices and demonstrate academic ability to schools. Target A*/A in 3-4 core subjects. This is also when students develop study habits that will carry into A Level.

IGCSE exams: target A*/A in core subjects
Develop mark-scheme study habits

05

Choose the optimal A Level combo

Month 19–21

This decision shapes the next 2 years and determines which university doors open. We analyze: target degree requirements, student strengths, subject synergies, and future career paths. The "golden trio" varies by field — Engineering needs Math + Physics + one more; Medicine needs Biology + Chemistry + Math.

06

IELTS 7.0+ & enter Year 12

Month 22–24

Achieve IELTS 7.0+ to meet UK university English requirements. Begin Year 12 (AS Level) with confidence, clarity, and a concrete 2-year plan. Students who reach this milestone with strong IGCSE grades and clear direction have a 96% success rate at our center.

IELTS 7.0+ (with 6.5+ in each component)
Begin AS Level (Year 12)
Start super-curricular activities aligned with target degree
Phase 3

Execution — A Level, UCAS & offers

Everything built in Phases 1-2 comes together. This is where preparation meets performance.

07

Open UCAS account

September of Year 13

Register on the UCAS platform, begin shortlisting 5 university choices, and start drafting the Personal Statement. This runs parallel with A2 study — time management becomes critical.

08

🚨 Oxbridge UCAS Deadline

October 15 of Year 13

Oxbridge and Medicine/Dentistry/Veterinary applications close on October 15. Personal Statement must be finalized, admissions tests (MAT, STEP, BMAT, UCAT) must be sat, and the school reference must be submitted. This is the single most intense deadline of the entire journey.

08b

Admissions tests + Interviews

October – January of Year 13

Admissions test results come in November-December. Oxbridge interviews take place in December. Non-Oxbridge interviews may follow in January-February. Preparation includes mock interviews with our Oxford/Cambridge alumni tutors.

09

🎉 A Level results + Confirm offer

August of Year 13

A Level results are released in mid-August. If your child meets the conditions of their offer, the place is confirmed. If not, Clearing provides a safety net. The journey that began 24-36 months ago reaches its destination.

6 mistakes Vietnamese families commonly make

Every mistake below was made by real families we've worked with. They're avoidable.

01

Starting preparation too late (from Year 11)

Many families only start thinking about UK study abroad when their child enters Year 11. By then, there's barely 18 months left — not enough to build strong IELTS, IGCSE foundations, and a competitive A Level profile.

Solution: Start from Grade 9-10. Even if the final decision hasn't been made, building academic English early gives your child a 12-month head start.

02

Focusing only on IELTS, ignoring Academic English

IELTS 7.0 doesn't mean your child can study A Level Chemistry in English. Academic English — subject-specific vocabulary, essay structures, lab report writing — is a completely different skill that IELTS prep doesn't cover.

Solution: Parallel-track: IELTS for the score + Academic English for actual learning ability. We provide subject-specific English coaching alongside A Level tutoring.

03

Choosing A Level subjects that don't match the target degree

A student wants to study Medicine but chooses Math + Economics + Business. No UK medical school accepts this combination. The error is discovered in Year 13 — too late to switch.

Solution: Research entry requirements for your top 5 target universities BEFORE choosing A Level subjects. We provide detailed combo consultation for every degree pathway.

04

Extracurriculars that are "broad but shallow"

Volunteering at 5 charities, playing 3 instruments, joining 4 clubs — but nothing connected to the target degree. UK universities want depth and relevance, not a list of activities.

Solution: Choose 2-3 activities directly related to your target degree. A student applying for Engineering should do a robotics project, not a dance club. Quality over quantity.

05

Writing the Personal Statement too late

Starting the PS in September of Year 13 — when the Oxbridge deadline is October 15. Five weeks to write the most important 4,000 characters of your child's life, while also studying for A2 mocks.

Solution: Start brainstorming in June/July of Year 12. Have a solid first draft by August. Use September for refinement only. We offer 3-round PS review with Oxbridge alumni.

06

Ignoring admissions tests

Many families don't realize that Oxbridge and competitive courses (Medicine, Law, Economics) require additional admissions tests: MAT, STEP, BMAT, UCAT, TSA, LNAT. These tests are as important as A Level grades — sometimes more so.

Solution: Identify required tests by May of Year 12. Begin preparation in the summer. We offer specialist coaching for all 8 major admissions tests.
